Sounding Balloons

Sounding Balloons are typically used to hoist a radiosonde to a great height. The height attained is dependent on balloon size; however the larger models typically lift up to the 30,000m range.

The radiosonde sensor relays a constant stream of data to a ground station, which is then used for weather forecasting.

The radiosonde is equipped with a GPS transmitter this enables the balloon to be tracked. The position of the weather balloon is constantly sent back to the ground receiving station. The data is then analysed and helps in providing information regarding wind speed and direction.

At its maximum altitude the balloon bursts and the payload falls back to earth. Heavier payloads should have parachutes attached to slow decent
